UPMC VS The People

Braddock Hospital Closing

Braddock Hospital Closing

Everywhere I go people are worried about how they will be affected when the contract between UPMC and Highmark health insurance expires on June 30, 2012. After a one-year run-out period, Highmark members will only have access to UPMC hospitals on an out-of-network basis.

Highmark covers 4.8 million policyholders, myself included, while UPMC Health Plan has 1.5 million members. More than one-third of the UPMC health system’s total revenues come from their health insurance premiums!

Forget continuous care and long-term doctor-patient relations, I’ll bet that most Highmark customers will not break away from their long standing healthcare plans. Instead they will look for alternative health care providers which will finally send the message to UPMC that they are not the be-all-end-all in healthcare.

There is an outstanding editorial in Sunday’s Post Gazette by Henry Posner III that explains all of this way better than I can. The bottom line for UPMC: If you ganifs don’t stop acting like chazzers you will find yourself in a very well deserved hot kettle of fish.
