Eating Local

Gotham Greens Brooklyn

Gotham Greens Brooklyn

Take a look at this fabulous farm, Gotham Greens, on the roof of a Brooklyn Warehouse. WOW! It is an impressive operation supplying much of Brooklyn and Manhattan with very fresh organic greens. Imagine getting your salad fixings from the roof of one of our north side warehouses not to mention how it would improve our view!

Buying local is a win-win for everyone. The products are more nutritious and flavorful, they cost less and your money supports the local economy.

Here in Pittsburgh, we might not have warehouse roof gardens but we do have many great urban and suburban farms. Pittsburgh Urban Farms Garden Dreams in Wilkinsburg specializing in heirloom tomatoes, sweet & hot peppers, eggplants and basil and Mildred’s Daughters Urban Farm grow a wide variety of specialty vegetables and flowers on 5 urban acres in Stanton Heights.

There are many farms that participate in local farmer’s markets, manage pick-your-own operations, and deliver food right to our doors. Try Isidore Foods: Local Farm Fresh Foods for delivery or take a day trip to one of my personal favorites, Soergel Orchards.

If you don’t have a lot of time or a means of transportation there are many farmer’s markets conveniently located throughout the city. Here is a 2011 list and an interactive map.

Every Tuesday I shop at my local Southside Farmer’s Market to pick up a selection of vegetables to roast for dinner. It’s easy. Cut eggplant, zucchini, beets, carrots, beans and peppers into bite size chunks. Drizzle with oil, salt and pepper. Add twigs of rosemary and cubes of tofu and bake at 425 for 40 minutes. Yummy!
