You are missing something if you have never attended a Special Olympics Bowling Tournament. There is a palpable excitement in the air as the lanes overflow with bowling balls, water bottles, snack bar food, coaches, family, friends and volunteers all to support athletes, irrespective of their age, handicap or sports abilities in their Special Olympics oath:

Let me win. But if I cannot win, let be brave in the attempt.

Yesterday it was bowling, next month it will be a basketball tournament at Pitt, in the spring there is the annual track and field meet at Baldwin High School, culminating in State Games at Penn State in the summer, all of which makes perfect sense considering the mission of the organization:

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
