Let’s Party

I Am My Mummy Exhibit '95

I was never too comfortable with my birthday. In the early days, not wanting to get older, not happy with where I was in my life, too easy to be disappointed- not the right presents, the right events, the right cake, etc….

Then there was an interesting development; I had my third child, Sarah, on my birthday. Initially, I welcomed her as my best birthday present ever, happy to allow it to be her birthday rather than mine. But friends and family found that difficult- wanting and not knowing how to celebrate the day for me.

I came up with what I thought was a clever alternative, to celebrate my Hebrew birthday which is the 19th of Sivan. (Sarah’s Hebrew birth date is the 23rd of Sivan.) That kind of worked for me during Sarah’s formative years but nobody liked that idea because they were never sure whom to celebrate when.

When I turned sixty, my kids took me on a Birthday schlep; an incredibly comprehensive look at my life in Pittsburgh. It was a fabulous acknowledgement of my process and the great things about celebrating a birthday.

So……Happy Birthday to Sarah and me, with health, happiness and lots more.

To quote Abraham Lincoln: In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.

how wonderful to celebrate together. to review the events of the past year to be filled with awe for the moment and to be open to the future. how wonderful to celebrate together to compare the significant aspects of the year
how wonderful to celebrate together to find the essence of it all. Happy Birthday to Sarah and Louise.
