There Is No Just Future Fashioned From Alice Walker’s Small Actions

I was not aware that Israel is being called an apartheid state until I read a letter by Alice Walker on The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel Website where she explains apartheid as her reason not to allow The Color Purple to be translated into Hebrew.

Apartheid in pre-1994 South Africa was racial separation with the intention to permanently benefit the white minority to the detriment of other races in an abhorrent system where blacks had no right to vote, hold political office, live in or even visit white areas, use white toilets or beaches or hospitals or marry whites.

In Israel, twenty percent of the populations are Arabs citizens who vote, have political parties, representatives in the Knesset and occupy positions on its Supreme Court- nothing like the definition of apartheid under the 1998 Rome Statute: “Inhumane acts … committed in the context of an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regime.”

The charge that Israel is an apartheid state is a false and malicious one that precludes, rather than promotes, peace and harmony. It is ridiculous. There is hostility and suspicion on both sides. Israel has agreed in concept to the existence of a Palestinian state in Gaza and much of the West Bank, waiting for the Palestinians to negotiate the parameters. In the absence of a peace agreement under Israeli control there is no intent to maintain “an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group” but rather defensive measures, roadblocks and security barriers, while under threat of attack from unrelenting terrorists.

Walker supported anti-Israel activism by participating in an unsuccessful flotilla of symbolic aid to the Gaza Strip. I was going to suggest that maybe Walker’s writing would offer more insight to Israeli than her political actions until I learned that she has an estranged daughter, Rebecca, who wrote the book: Black, White and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self.

Israel, forget about Alice. Translate the more relevant daughter, Rebecca!

I think it is time for all the “liberals” to rededicate their complete support for Israel. it is more and more evident that humanitarian slogans are being subtly used to attack Israel. Why is it that Israel is the _Only Nation_ not on the Security Council of the United Nations?
