This day, the 13th of Av, over 90,000 Jews are gathering at the Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey for a worldwide celebration of Torah study. They are celebrating the completion of the reading of the Talmud, Siyum Hashas, by means of seven and a half year daily study cycle, Daf Yomi.

The Twelfth Siyum HaShas of Daf Yomi began 88 years ago with the vision of Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Lublin Poland where Jews throughout the world would learn the same daf, a two-sided page of the Talmud each day.

Daf Yomi started its current cycle on March 2, 2005 with the Gemara, Mesechet Berachot. Then it took seven years and five months to read 2,711 pages of the Gemara.

While the New Jersey celebration will be the largest, there are smaller festivities in Toronto, many European cities, and a week long convention in Tel Aviv.

The changing place of women in Talmud study will be apparent at Matan, an institute for women’s Torah study in Jerusalem where women will have their own gathering. This will mark the conclusion of the Matan group’s first daf yomi cycle.
