It’s Going To Take More Than Vaginas To Change The Republicans!

Code Pink Vaginas

Code Pink Vaginas

In June, during a debate over one of the most restrictive anti-choice bills, Michigan State Representative, Lisa Brown, read a letter from a voter that concluded: “Finally Mr. Speaker, I’m flattered that you are all so interested in my vagina…”

The next day, Representative Brown was barred from speaking on the House floor.

CODEPINK, the action group responsible for One Billion Rising, the global call to walk out of jobs, classrooms and houses on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2013, is organizing artists to bring representations of vaginas for a march to the Republican Headquarters in Tampa on August 27th.

What will we get with Paul Ryan?

Ryan has a 100 percent rating from the National Right to Life Committee. He co-sponsored the “Sanctity of Human Life Act”, which gives fertilized eggs “all the legal and constitutional attributes and privileges of personhood” and bans all abortions without exception.

Ryan opposes the Affordable Care Act that extends health-care coverage to millions of Americans and prohibits insurance companies from discriminating against pre-existing conditions as too expensive. It includes specific benefits for women, including co-pay free birth control for insured women and increased access to preventative healthcare services, including cancer screenings and well-woman exams. The act also forbids insurance companies from charging women more for coverage than men.

Ryan supported attempts to strip Planned Parenthood of federal funding. Half of Planned Parenthood’s clients pay through Medicaid.

Ryan co-sponsored the Religious Freedom Tax Repeal Act of 2012 allowing employers in public and private sectors to deny women birth control coverage if they had a moral or religious objection to contraception. It seeks to undermine the compromise Obama reached with religious groups, allowing them to opt out of contraception coverage in favor of insurance companies.

Ryan’s budget plan cuts safety net programs like Social Security and Medicare, along with food stamps and childcare. The program would become a block grant to the states. Under the current system, the federal government ensures that states get enough money to cover everyone who is eligible for Medicaid. Under the Ryan plan, states would receive financial support based on a predetermined formula that most likely would force state officials to pick and choose who they would cover.

After the vaginas, I put my money on the Nuns on the Bus, the nuns who went on a nine-state bus tour to protest Ryan’s proposed cuts. The nuns called the Ryan budget un-Christian because it fails to take care of the most vulnerable Americans. They offer alternatives that raise taxes on corporations and the wealthy.
