Thank G-d for Books

Over the weekend, I read this fascinating excerpt from Salman Rushdie’s novel, Joseph Anton, in the New Yorker. Twenty-three years ago, The Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a death warrant forcing the novelist into a decade of seclusion. Joseph Anton tells of the experience written in a deliberately distanced third-person voice.

It’s a coincidence- or is it- that this is Banned Books Week designed to actively support the freedom to seek and to express ideas in writing and in reverse for our right to read freely.

Banned Books Week draws attention to the harms of censorship. The American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom reported 326 attempts last year to remove or restrict books from school curricula and libraries. Here is the list of the top fifty restricted books from the last decade.

The Banned Books Virtual Read-Out features videos of readers exercising their First Amendment right to read a banned book and see how our own library system helps teens find banned books.
