The Black Swan Has Arrived

Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better.
Mitt Romney

One of the vital functions of our government is the disaster coordination occurring right now in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Created by Jimmy Carter, The Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, became a cabinet post in the Bill Clinton administration. President George W. Bush demoted it to the Department of Homeland Security where it was totally ineffective during Hurricane Katrina. President Obama re-elevated its status but continues to battle with Republicans about FEMA’s budget.

Mitt Romney believes that states should be in charge of emergency management. I shutter to think what will happen if Romney becomes our leader? Those in Hurricane Sandy’s path are fortunate that Republican ideology has not replaced democratic policy. If this black swan doesn’t assure Obama’s reelection, nothing will.

I agree that FEMA is there to help states who are in the midst of catastrophe and initially unable to help themselves. FEMA can also provide the coordination and resources country wide to address the crisis. For people like romney who are rich, believe that they are immune to disaster, and can buy their way out of anything I hope that he will not be so prideful that he cannot accept help when he or a family member needs it.

And if president what would he tell the Governor of New Jersey who is calling for help to deal with the disaster in his state? Tough Luck!!
