Legal Marijuana????

This week brought to mind my college friend, Mary Jane. Since the old days she has come out of the closet and made herself approved for medical use in eighteen states including Oregon. Twelve others are considering it.

Oregon’s neighbor, Washington, and Colorado have legalized consumption of marijuana as a recreational drug. Consumers 21 and over may possess up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use, up to 16 ounces of marijuana-infused solids or 72 ounces of infused liquids. Colorado’s measure also permits home growing of up to six plants.

Some interesting facts from Portland:

Marijuana is still a Schedule I Drug under federal law and its possession and sale remain illegal under federal law.

Possession of Less than One Ounce of Marijuana in Oregon is subject to a citation similar to a traffic ticket. Smoking it in public spaces is prohibited. Medical use must be in the privacy of a residence.

The threshold for DUI-alcohol is generally when a driver’s blood alcohol content is .08 or more. The threshold for DUI-Drugs is impaired to a perceptible degree.

In Washington, you can get a DUI for smoking weed while driving a car or riding a bicycle. If an officer establishes probable cause you will be asked to come to a precinct and take a blood sample for testing.

If you want to go to Washington to smoke, get a designated driver, take public transit, or plan to stay the night in Washington.

In this day at this age, I’ll stick to the coffee.
