Hate To Love Fashion Week

I have a love-hate relationship with Fashion Week. It’s nice to see what the designers are creating, but it perpetuates things I despise like the non-function of high-heeled shoes as one small example.

A good part of the week is how it motivates questions and protests. For one models joined labor activists to protest clothing brand Nautica over its parent company’s failure to sign up to improve conditions in Bangladesh factories pointing the way to more made in the USA with Walmart’s promises to dramatically increase production of American-made products and Brooks Brothers employment of 300 workers in its NY factory.

There were also the actions, one as part of the ongoing protest against animal cruelty for the sake of style specifically geared at designers’ use of snake and reptile skin and the other to name and shame the designers who use only the homogeneous standard models.

Actually, I’m looking forward to the end of a physical Fashion Week. Like everything else, it’s time to go digital.
