Make It Work

Make It Work

Life is not a solo act. It’s a huge collaboration, and we all need to assemble around us the people who care about us and support us in times of strife. It is not an easy road ahead. It is going to be filled with obstacles and you have to navigate them. We learn from these things. Tim Gunn

There is a wonderful an article on Tim Gunn from my favorite television program in this week’s NYTimes. In his role as mentor on Project Runway, Tim Gunn listens, consoles, advises and motivates, offering sage wisdom about how to navigate the world responsibly and respectfully by always taking the high road.

He comes by his skills and knowledge being an administrator at Parsons for over thirty years. He expresses his opinions simply and honestly. If he has something negative to say (which is often), he is amazingly diplomatic. The designers value his thoughtful opinions knowing they come from deep within with the sincere desire to eliminate self-doubt.

Tim disapproves of worldly things such as using technology to distraction, exhibiting rude behavior to others and the fashion industry’s obsession with thinness. To him, fashion is not inconsequential or ephemeral; it is critically important. Clothing choices send a message about who we are and how the world perceives us. When we look good, it shores up our confidence and we navigate the world with a sense of ownership.

The finale of Project Runway comes this Thursday at 9:00 on Lifetime.
