IMPORTANT: Dear Louise Silk

This is to inform you that Highmark Blue Cross Clue Shield will discontinue the health care plan referenced above on December 31, 2013. Because you are currently enrolled in this plan, you will be required to obtain new replacement coverage that is effective beginning January 1, 2014.

Mit-in-derinin, I need health insurance. Because Pennsylvania does not have its own state healthcare exchange, I have had the unfortunate experience of trying to use the new government site: HEALTHCARE.GOV

At first I couldn’t get registered- that took maybe a dozen tries. When I finally got a notice that I was registered, I had no idea of the correct username and was not able to retrieve the information.

In my frustration, I tried the live chat- where I was given no other solution that to try again at a less busy time.

I finally gave up and decided to try the UPMC website which actually worked pretty well. I narrowed my options to 10 of the 23 plans, but with so many choices of deductibles and co-pays making me unsure of the best choice, I went to visit one of the new UPMC kiosks at each of our local malls. This ended up to be worse than a live chat; the clerks knew nothing and I had spent my afternoon going to and from the mall.

What can I say? I don’t want to be a kvetch, but this is tsuris and I’ve got gornisht, only a lock-in-kop. There are lots of explanations about why the government web site isn’t working and lots of reasons to be reluctant to enroll in either UPMC or Highmark insurance, but I have emergency gall bladder surgery last year and I won’t be eligible for Medicare until June of 2015. Feh!

Oh Vey Every civilized country but ours offers everyone health insurance.
    What is wrong with us.
Suggestion” try AARP and Highmark in addition to upmc I prefer one where I can go anywhere to any dr.
