The Answer is in Fossil Fuels

This weather is frightening! It doesn’t seem like global warming is the right term for frigid temperatures, but as I explained in an earlier blog, our current situation has resulted because everything that is frozen on earth melting. The great ice sheet of the arctic has been reduced by more than half and the oceans are about 30% more acidic than they were 30 years ago because the chemistry of seawater changes as it absorbs carbon from the atmosphere.

Scientists have determined that any amount of carbon in the atmosphere greater than 350 parts per million is not compatible with the planet on which civilization developed and to which life on earth is adapted. Today, our atmosphere is 400 parts per million CO2 and rising at about 2 parts per million per year.

To solve this trouble we need to dramatically reduce our carbon footprint by over the next 40 years mainly by stopping the use of fossil fuels. But it will never work if we continue to allow the wielding of enormous political power by those who make vast profits through the use of fossil fuels.
