It took a friend of a friend of a friend for me to visit the amazing City Of Asylum over on the North Side. We went to meet Qais (Kice) Akbar Omar. Born in 1982 in Kabul, Qais is a fourth generation carpet seller. Currently he is a Risk Fellow at Harvard University. His story is in the riveting book: A Fort of Nine Towers, which he read from the night we were there. What a story!
City of Asylum is a sanctuary for endangered literary writers based on the North Side that simultaneously works to energize the neighborhood. They are about to do just that with the transformation of the blighted Masonic Hall. Check out their events page and go see for yourself people who make a difference!
