Try this: Close your eyes. Watch yourself breathe without trying to change your breath in any way. Accept it as it is. After a few moments, ask yourself, What is my true fate? You may feel a moment of sadness arise. Don’t be alarmed and don’t interpret. This is simply the first gate: sadness.
Now, consciously refrain from interpreting this sadness as some sadness from your past. If you have been brave enough to do this, you will notice that your new sadness has a tenderhearted quality. This is the second gate.
Contemplate that tender feeling for a few moments. If you look carefully, you will notice that there is a new aura around the sadness: It is a quiet joy. This is the third gate. You may never have known this quiet, small joy before. Just be there and watch yourself grow into your true fate.
