What do a conch shell, handmade bags, folkart sculpture, autobot, old patched backpack, Harry Potter book series, dolphin earrings, popbeads bracelet, antique picture frame, Be Here Now, bar schmattas, Twilight book series, miniature origami paper set, beaded purse and a ceramic baby elephant all have in common? They were the gifts we exchanged at our Thanksgiving/Chanukah celebration this year.
The term white elephant refers to an extravagant but burdensome gift that cannot be easily disposed of, based on the legend of the King of Siam gifting rare albino elephants to courtiers who had displeased him, that they might be ruined by the animals’ upkeep costs.
It added a fun, festive element to our Thanksgiving and was a great opportunity to acknowledge Chanukah while we were all together. Chag Chanuka Sameach
