I spend a lot of time at Our Clubhouse formally Gilda’s Club. The walls are lined with great posters of Gilda Radner displaying her fabulous spirit. She died on this date in 1989 from ovarian cancer at the age 42.
Most of us who remember her knew her as one of the hilarious members the first cast of Saturday Night Live. She appeared in the premier of SNL and remained with the show until 1980. She created numerous memorable characters, like Roseanne Roseannadanna and Emily Letella, along with numerous skits that drew attention to her Jewish identity as in this fake advertisement for Jewess Jeans.
GIlda wrote an autobiography during her illness, It’s Always Something, describing her career and the support she’d found within the Wellness Community battling her illness. Her husband Gene Wilder established the Gilda Radner Ovarian Detection Center at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.
