The quilt ZEN CIRCLES is about completion. I combined the all-knowing, omni-present action of being, Ein Sof (יהוה) from Jewish mysticism, with, ensō (円相), Zen’s universal expression of wholeness.
Stitching circles in patchwork requires skill gained through practice. I perfected curved piecing, early on, making traditional patterns like Drunkard Path and Double Wedding Ring. Later, taking advantage of the pliable nature of tee-shirts, I progressed to free-form circles without patterns. ZEN CIRCLEScombines both skills.
For the materials, I considered shopping online or at The Salvation Army, until from within my closet, I repurposed clothing in a medley of greens and browns, including my precious Zen robe.
To use the remnants, I chose a kaleidoscope pattern that is an optical illusion making straight piecing look circular. The Kaleidoscope Quilt completes the Oneness for ZEN CIRCLES.
